IT’S DOGGY DAY
The day had finally come. It was doggy day. I had on my doggy ears. The dining room was decorated with all kinds of decorations and refreshments, including my assorted pastries for the trainers. It felt like Christmas. At just the stroke of 9:15 am we heard the first bark. It was Lucy. She’s the second from the right. These service dogs were finishing up the last of their training. I think they were just as excited as the residents were. With a few of the residents waiting in the lobby there was the sound of laughter, joy, and all around fun. They quickly made their way up the elevator to meet everyone in the dining room. It was the first time we had done anything like this so we were not sure how many would be there. Many of them are bed ridden and others had really not had a reason to get up out of bed to go anywhere. When I finally was able to go up to see it I was in awe. The dining room was packed with those who found love and comfort from the dogs. It was a memory I will never forget. But it didn’t stop there. As they were leaving I was told they had gone to the rooms of those who could not get out of bed. One story touched me deeply. The bed was higher than the rest and the dogs had not been trained how to maneuver it to get to the patient. Except Lucy. Without any hesitation she lifted herself up and laid her paws and then head on the patients arm. He started to cry. It had been a very long time since anyone had touched him with that kind of compassion and kindness. Needless to say I cried and maybe a few others did too. Dogs, I believe, are Gods angels to bring us joy, unconditional love, and to forgive in a way that no other human can really do. Like these special dogs, Jesus brings JOY, unconditional love, and forgiveness when we don’t deserve it. It is my prayer this week that you too might experience and KNOW how much you matter to Him…He’s right there if you will let Him in..He will never leave you or forsake you because He loves you..
